Precipitation
-
Soils that have vegetation will have more pores (space) in the soil which allows more water to soak in (via root systems) than soil with no vegetation.
-
Vegetation slows down surface runoff by increasing friction.
-
If the rate of precipitation is greater than the rate of infiltration, runoff is produced
-
A hard, fast downpour will result in more runoff than a gentle, longer rain.
-
Soils with a lot of organic material can hold more water than other soils.
-
Soils that are more compact will allow less water to pass and hold less.
-
Water from precipitation falling on slopes flows to areas of lower elevation.
-
The steeper the slope, the faster the water flows, the greater the erosion.
-
In areas with steeo slopes, little water seeos into the ground before it runs off.
