River Activities
-
Evaporation requires energy to be added to the water molecules (heat is absorbed from the air), changing their state from a liquid to a gas.
-
If you add energy to molecules, they move faster and farther apart.
-
Freshwater can be grouped into three categories:
-
Surface Water
-
Ground Water
-
Glaciers
-
Moving water is the single most important agent sculpting the earth's land surface
-
Running water provides:
-
Energy
-
Transportation
-
Irrigation for crops
-
Water makes its way to the ocean under the influence of gravity
-
The time it takes to get to the ocean depends on the velocity of the river
-
3 factors determine the velocity of a stream:
-
Gradient
-
Gradient - how steep a given part of a river is: the slope.
-
A river with a high gradient will have a high velocity
-
Discharge
-
The discharge of a stream is the volume of water flowing past a certain point in a given unit of time
-
Dishcarge = width x depth x velocity
-
Shape and size of channel
-
There are 3 activities always occuring in rivers:
-
Erosion
-
Transportation
-
Solution (materials are dissolved in water)
-
Suspension (materials are carried above the floor)
-
Bed load
-
Deposition
